Seems like yesterday doesn't it? Now they are actually considering college options. It's hard to believe. When I first started learning the college recruiting process there were a few things I found out very quickly:
I started way too late
I didn't know as much as I thought I did
If you don't have the right perspective, you will be in trouble
It can be very confusing if you don't have a process to follow
As a result, I thought I'd try and help out the rest of the players in the program and create the website that we have, provide the information that you needed and most importantly develop a process to make it easier.
Most parents don’t understand how complicated it can be and/or have an unrealistic view of the process. Before you know it, it’s simply too late.
The last thing I did was prepare this seminar. We at NEU have done this a number of times and it grows and evolves each year. Here's what it is all about:
Objectives:
Leave with a proper perspective on the relationship between college academics and athletics – your perspective will guide the process;
Learn a logical approach to the process that you can modify to fit your specific needs and some of the tools available to enhance your approach;
Discuss the process, opinions and your questions from some who have done it - college players, coaches and some who went through the process.
What You Walk Away With:
Understand the college recruiting process
The NCAA and it's requirements (D1, D2, D3)
What are colleges looking for - academics and soccer
How do you get noticed by both
Scholarships, Merit Awards, Alumni Awards
How to create your own personal approach to the process
A proven 7 step process to guide you through
Challenges and opportunities you will face
How to market your player
Learn some of the tools that you need and others that can help
A "Marketing Me" plan
Websites, books, resources
College visit strategies
How to interview a coach
Open discussion with coaches and parents who've done it
*Key Note: ideally a parent attends with their player. It is important for both to hear the same story. It will help players decide what college soccer is all about and if they want to commit. It will help parents learn the process, what's involved and tips to make it easier. However, based on experience it is suggested that freshman and eith grade parents atend without their player.
